Isabel is a client of Enlace, a Global Partnerships microfinance partner institution. A single mother to three children, Isabel has worked extremely hard to support her family through her business as a seamstress. In addition to providing basic necessities, Isabel made it possible for her children to attend school – an expense the majority of people living in such poverty are unable to afford. Today her children are grown, and she is the proud mother of three high school graduates.
Isabel took her first microcredit loan through Enlace in 1999. Before that time, Isabel had borrowed from “private lenders.” These lenders are known for charging exorbitant interest rates, making it nearly impossible for borrowers to get ahead financially. With her reputation as a hard worker, Isabel was invited by Enlace to join as a communal bank member. She borrowed $60 to start her own business of designing and making clothing, as well as to help her mother begin a chocolate-making business. Isabel has built her own home and has grown her business, which is thriving with close to 100 customers. Recently Isabel received Enlace’s Client of the Year award, recognizing her excellent credit history and business success. |

“With my first loan, I purchased material and fabric, zippers, etc. That's what poor people want -- dollars, and to work.” |
