ORGANIZATIONAL PROFILE: AMC is a private microfinance institution that started in 1996 as a credit program of ADEL Morazán, a local nonprofit organization with various social programs. The growth of the microcredit operations led to the creation of AMC as a specialized financial organization in 2001. Over the last few years, AMC has positioned itself as a strong microfinance institution in the eastern and central part of El Salvador. Legally AMC is a cooperative, but its founding partners and only shareholders are ADEL Morazán (99.57%), eight grassroots associations of farmers and microentrepreneurs (ADECOMYPES) (0.27%) and 12 private individuals (0.16%). AMC’s operations are concentrated in and around cities and towns in the eastern and central parts of the country.
