Génesis Empresarial was created in 1988 as a project of Fundación Tecnológica, a Guatemalan NGO, with the support of Acción International and the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). It became an independent NGO in 1996. The organization is now the second largest MFI in Guatemala, with 53 branches
operating in all 22 departments of Guatemala. Génesis's main clients are owners of microenterprises and small businesses, with a strong focus on women in rural areas. As of the end of 2006, 66% of its portfolio was with women borrowers and 92% of the portfolio was in rural areas.
Génesis utilizes four credit methods: individual loans, solidarity group loans, village banking and community loans. It offers credit for working capital, the purchase of machinery and equipment, and home construction and improvements. The organization also provides training and management consulting to businesses and community organizations, plus technical assistance for housing projects.
